Getting to Barra

By ferry

From the mainland, Caledonian Macbrayne  operates ferries from Oban to Castlebay.  Oban can be reached by direct train or bus from Glasgow - see Scotrail or Scottish Citylink  for timetables.

If arriving from Uist, there is a ferry from Eriskay to Ardmhor in the north of Barra.

By air

There are flights from Glasgow to Barra operated by British Airways.  From the airport, most flights are met by a bus to Castlebay, then follow directions below, or book a taxi or hire car.

Getting around

Buses connect with flights and (sometimes) with the Eriskay ferry, and will take you to Castlebay.  Some of these buses go on to Vatersay, which will drop you at the door - ask for Nasg and see directions below.  Many people get around in Barra without a car and the house is within walking distance of shops and most facilities. Buses are infrequent so pick up a timetable at the tourist office.  We can provide details if you need help in planning your trip - just ask. Cycles can also be hired in Castlebay - Tel: 01871 810284.

Directions to the house

From Castlebay, follow the main road  towards the west coast (go left from the ferry terminal).  Turn left at the road to Vatersay, signposted to Vatersay and Nasg.  26 Bentangaval is a few hundred yards along this road on the left, just before the road starts to climb a steep hill.  It's about a 20 minute walk or 5 minute drive from the ferry terminal.
